A letter to my future daughter-in-law

Hi Dear Daughter-in-law,

Hope this letter finds you in good place, shape and mind.

I also hope that you haven't met my son so far.  In case you haven't met him yet, then I want to assure you that he is in good place, ?shape and ?mind too.

Just for you to have an idea about his great mind, he is a great thinker for his age.  He was right next to me, when I titled this post and asked me innocently in Hamam style, "Daughter in law na yaaru ma?" (who is daughter-in-law?)  I replied, "un varungala pondatti" (your future wife). "Oh! You mean my "sister in law"?. I blinked.  "If she is your "daughter"-in-law, then she should be my "sister"-in-law". Ayyo ayyo ayyo.. mudila pa...

Wherever you are, please come soon. Not that I am trying to get rid of my son. He is nice, good looking, tall, fair, handsome and he is in his first year of college and spends 4 hours in travelling to college  and 6 hours in college and 6 hours sleeping.. The rest 8 hours he eats, watches TV, play games in laptop, mobile and eats some more and stay angry.

He got his own weird, twisted sense of humour, most of the times you don't get them and when you get them, you wish you didn't.

He has close to 2000 friends in his FB account and out of the 250 odd indian names, all other names sounds like korean/japanese/chinese. Whatever status he puts in FB, these Korean/Japanese/Chinese promptly likes them and they call themselves as Ma(a)nga something.

He calls everyone Machaan, I am losing count of the machaans and am worried if he means them literally.

I'd rather warn you beforehand to learn and play games, that way you can login from your laptop and he from his laptop and be part of the same multi player games and earn lots of lives and live happily for multiple lifetimes.

If you are a cleanliness freak, then maybe you should learn to ignore little things like the dry food plates collecting fungus lying next to him, a dozen pillows strewn around the room, and his go green, "let us not waste water" during weekends, by taking bath.

Well! all said and done, the bonus is you will get a husband, who will take you to movies everyday and watch English serials with you the rest. If you want to get his attention, try to get an audition with the BBT team and act in Big Bang Theory and I assure you, he will watch the episodes 3 or 4 times a day and you will be duly attended to.

He will not fight with you or hear you screaming as long as your voice crosses the alarming decibel limits. Most of the time, he has his ears plugged to some English music and hums loud.  Not to worry, I will ask him to buy you an earphone too, and you can plug it on as well.

If you are a health freak, then probably you should be less fussy again, as all his favourites consists of either cheese, butter or ghee and one word, no make it two words not in his dictionary are fat-free and sugar- free.

He enjoys his life the way he wants and if you mold your style to match his, welcome aboard.  I have an apartment ready for you guys and it's all yours with my blessings. What!?! No, No I won't move with you guys. What do you take me for? I am not that dumb to come between a young couple.  He is all yours!

Dying to meet you soon.

Regards,
Your Husband's Mom

PS: Unlike other friends of yours, you won't have anything to complain against your mother-in-law.

Vishwaroopam - The road not taken

Having waited for a week to watch Vishwaroopam made me restless, curious and eager and I was at Sathyam Escape Cinemas one hour before the show time on 14th february. Though a weekday, the mall was crowded being St. Valentine's day.  All the men walking behind, beside their women, with foolish smiles, scary smiles (especially when they stretched their arm and point out to a shop). Everywhere valentine day posters, special programs, hearts seen from toffees to stuffed toys to cakes. Shopkeepers busy uttering a silent thanks to our saint.

I grabbed my cold coffee, popcorn with extra butter, a piece of creamy cake and potato wedges.  Mind it was for two people and not one. And this boy had a hearty appetite unlike me.

We entered the theatre 10 minutes before show time and settled in our seat to watch the film.

After all the hiatus and hiccups,  finally I started to watch the Vishwaroopam.

It was a new experience.  If not for the Tamil dialogues, it moved with the same pace, style like a nicely shot Hollywood action thriller. I might be naive, when I refer to English films as Hollywood films. From the land of Bollywood, Gollywood, Tollywood, I am quite religious about the woods.

I expected a strong storyline, but I got nicely made sequences of shots.
The kathak song and dance by now older Kamalhassan (tried to identify him with the elder kamal of salangai oli. Man! ageing is beyond our imagination) is good. But, somehow the expressions are lost behind those wrinkles on his face. I think the hardship of shooting such a spectacular film shows the strain.

The movie shifts between flashback and present just like Hey Ram and  there are places if you are not attentive might miss the shift.

There are loads of action perfectly shot. At one place when the Jeep fall on a man, you can't help but gasp. There's this other place when the remains of a body land before Kamal Hassan after a bomb blast. For us, who never used to grumble but watch, when they show cardboard boxes for computers in Doordarshan Tuesday dramas, this is sheer luxury.

Humour laced through out the film, not jarring but makes us smile. Thank god! Err.. rather Kamal for not having seperate track for humour.

Andrea, shekar kapoor had very less role to perform,  almost non existent. Hope to see their performance in the part 2. Pooja Kumar and Rahul Bose stood out and whoever lent the voice to Pooja is amazing, for once the Brahmin slang is perfect and not exaggerated.

I loved the scene when Pooja climbs the stair and lie down on her bed, Kamal snoring with his eyes open. The expression on his face is priceless. The expression on Pooja's face after she witnesses her husband's valor is priceless too.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy a joy through out. BGM definitely needs a special mention. Doesn't go overboard.

Lots of characters are shown, to imply the depth of other characters and for us to determine the nature of other character. The lady doctor, Rahul's wife, his son, even the Horse that's shot by Kamal Hassan. Not sure if this would reach all audiences.

The film shot in the US and Afganistan, the location and scenes are well framed and neatly arrayed.

I still am quizzing for the reason why the film was banned. Only bad was shown as bad makes me quiz even more.

But, why is that when the film ended, I sat for few more minutes... Did I expect more? Hoping the second part happens and even if it does, hope it doesn't get chopped off for reasons that cannot be explained.

One has to agree Kamal is an entertainer and near perfect in what he does. It was worth the wait. But, mera dil maangae more kamal sahab... :)

Let God bless his atheist son!

A walk on the corridors of a deserted school....

Those deserted corridors, I walked not fast,
Bright classrooms, empty and vast...
Huge blackboards inked with chalk,
The dreams of toddlers forgotten but marked.

Those cheerful posters of Sun, God and Moon,
Decorated the walls of those dusty rooms...
Every step I took, heard few silent ones steep..
Every corner I peeped, a hidden giggle leaped...

The school bell, I wish to ring,
Wanting to see those kids flood in..
Those cheerful, lovely children gliding inside,
Full of whispers, laughter and pride.

Parents waving their children bye,
Wards planning for those little lies...
Praises or punishments taken alike,
Those tiny little eyes, shine to rise...

Teachers planning for the day's lessons,
Kids await not so patient,
They dodge, they play, they learn and have fun,
They wager, they lose but gain in the long run.

The deserted school not so deserted,
I just have to close my eyes to hear the chatter...
Every stone tells me a story,
I love to listen the now forgotten glory.

If I have hands, two storey long,
I would hug and hold the building strong,
Those invisible tear stains seen on the walls,
I try wiping through this sodden song..

Wish I could revive, the fallen pride,
Wish to raise the mast back and straight,
The silent words screaming loud,
Closed my heart and walked not so proud...

Kamal Hassan's Vishwaroopam - "Justice delayed is justice denied"

Today's The Hindu front page coverage on vishwaroopam issue

After observing the battle between an individual and Tamil Nadu government for the past week or two, a not too funny Tom and Jerry race, I decided to write this post and vent my anger, frustration, anxiety and worry on my poor readers.

My usual tag 'I am an optimist, I still in believe in India', has now taken a severe hit.  Either am turning a pessimist or India is testing my optimism and checking my threshold.

This "individual", is a guy who has creative brains, awesome screen presence, with an aura of intelligence and subtle spark of humour.

Kamal Hassan, is an entertainer to the core, who contributes to Indian cinema as a versatile actor, producer, director, screen writer. Someone whom we can look up to and feel proud about.  Someone who enters our conversation quite frequently without our knowledge, through his quips, through his ways of looking at ordinary happenings in an extraordinary way.  Quite a mature, confident (some call it arrogance) man, who pushes himself to achieve perfection, which is hard to achieve in an old fashioned, lethargic, corrupted society like ours. Political leaders waiting for a chance to divert the prying eyes of public from their not so pure public profile.

Whoa! Why am I talking in circles?

Vishwaroopam, his new spy thriller has faced lots of obstacles right from the day it was given the name and continued till the day it almost got released, only to be shelved again. For more than 2 weeks now, we have been talking about this, reserving tickets waiting to watch in the cinemas or paid for the DTH and waiting to watch the film in our drawing room with our family.  did we get to watch? While few of our neighbouring states, countries had the privilege to watch this film and giving good ratings, we are still debating on whether the film would see our theatres or not.

There is this man, who pledged all his properties to make this film and is on the verge of losing everything hard earned by him.
There is this man, who doesn't easily yield to so called rituals of Indian film industry, doesn't stick to norms, quite transparent and strict when it comes to what he preaches and practice.
There is this man, who doesn't support any political party and has no godfather to back him up.
There is this man, who sculpted this film from all angles and made sure there is absolutely no flaw and when he took few steps back to admire his handiwork, to his horror found it was grabbed for not one reason and kept out of his reach till today.
There is this man who after all his hardships said he will burn the tamil version of movie before CM's office and leave Chennai for good.

Even if supreme court dismiss the ban, we can find a new flaw and start a new fight all over again.

God save India, a name sake democracy, a name sake secular country.

PS: Heard that our CM has finally broke her silence and offered amicable settlement.  I can only hope and pray that during  the tripartite meeting, a new issue doesn't crop up.

Nirbhaya, Brave heart - Collection of thoughts (Contd)

While people who responded to my request by giving their views about the Delhi gang rape victim, Nirbhaya, there is this gentleman, Mr. D.T. Mohan, whom I respect and admire a lot, contributed to the cause by writing a poem and later his thoughts and the means and ways for betterment of the situation.

To introduce Mr. D.T. Mohan, he was running a school until recently and been serving the society by providing good education to young minds and watched them grow, develop wings and grew immensely in their careers.

I feel really proud to have his thoughts here.  His time is more valuable.  A senior citizen, who had seen the past and living the present, but without any reserve had given his views, laced with humour, can't help if it's little wry/sarcastic; the situation demands for it.

Thanks so much, Sir.

(I am mentioning names in this post to make sure the thoughts are recorded, especially as the anguish is from a senior person, from the educational sector.)

Here we go:

His e-mail to me started with his communication with Hon. Justice Verma.

To

The Honourable Justice Verma
Honourable Sir,

Having seen your email address, in today morning’s newspaper, I venture to put forth the following submissions:

1. Setting up of truly fast-track courts in thought, word and deed.

 (a) Some of the parameters may be as follows:
                        (i) Counsel for both sides, particularly the prosecution, should be clearly instructed that no adjournments will be allowed, and they should make themselves available for daily conduct of the case, till both sides rest.
(ii) Counsel will be penalized for absence (since that will be without the court’s leave) for a sum that will be at least twice the cost of running the court for the day.
(iii) The police should be allowed no more than 30 days for their entire investigation, and another 15 days for the filing of the case in court.

2.  To negate the shortage of qualified judicial personnel, specifically judges, a separate  Judicial Services Recruitment Board should be established as fast as possible, with two levels of Examinations within six months of each other, and the results to be announced within 60 days of the second examination.

3. All law syllabi should contain specific material for the quick conduct of cases.

4. On par with the above, medical education syllabi should increase weightage of material, tests/examinations, and if necessary, papers, on forensic studies.   If not already there, a separate PG diploma course in Forensics should be created.

5. Concurrent with the establishment of fast-track courts, all/increased appointments to forensic analysis postings should be made in an equally fast manner.

In spite of my utmost care, if any of the wordings or phrases appear peremptory, please do forgive me.   I apologize most profoundly if such is the case.

Thanking you for your patience

Yours truly
D.T. Mohan

Since most of the above have to be carried out by the Govt. of India, we can relax in the confidence that they will not be implemented in the near future.

You don't have to lose hope, however.   You can also be confident that a plethora of committees will be appointed as late as possible covering each of the various facets of this phenomenon, and over time the reports, when submitted, will not be available for public scrutiny.  Being a democracy, we can use the RTI, and we will be encouraged by officialdom to go right up to the Supreme Court.

VANDE MATARAM!

If all that sounds very pro-inactive, here's what we can really do, so as to not allow this fire of fear in our abdomen go out!

1.  It is time all of us thought about a women's sector and a youth sector. We have the public sector, private sector, bureaucratic sector (which after Independence, was upgraded to Re-Inforced Steel frame, as against the iron frame left behind by our erstwhile masters),  so why not the women and youth sector outside the control of the political sector?  As a wag recently suggested, what happens if all the women in India, (or even just our cities)go on strike for just one day?

2. Women NGOs should consider

(a) publicising the necessary protocol of forensic tests required, on a rape victim all across India.

(b) Setting up medical laboratories dedicated to examination of rape victims, at least in State capitals for a start, and in all District Headquarters.  The laboratories should be independently certified about their unimpeachability.

Worried about funds?  For Heaven's sake and the 'khap panchayat's' sake, don't ask the government.  Just anything up to Rs.10 from women & girl students only should work wonders.

But do make sure accounts are maintained well.  A raid from the I-T Department and the ED will not be a surprise, but almost a certainty.

NGOs should set up data centres with teams of activists to keep track of complaints of rape etc in every district HQ, and feed such info into a central database.

Once a month a report on outstanding cases to be released to the media, high-lighting extreme delay in the procedures.  This is in the fond hope that there will be at least one national newspaper and/or TV channel willing to spread the news around.

Time to start thinking?  Please do, if possible.

Regards

Mohan

P.S.  I was born a year after Independence,  but seriously regret my continued existence to this day, which will never stop talking about its ancient and wonderful heritage.  I always wonder how all this could happen today with such an ancient and wonderful heritage.  All this talk about India and Bharat is just that much bilirubin.

Come on, let's do something rather than talking or standing with candles in the night.

Has there been any decrease in the reports on rapes appearing in the media?
How about ad companies stopping use of female models for selling peanuts?
How about self-regulation by film producers to cancel  all 'item numbers'?
How about political parties in both the India Shining and Incredible India colour asking their legislators          accused of rape/molestation/outraging women's modesty' to step down on the grounds of guilty under proven innocent?

In case their service to the nation is indispensable, how about releasing all under trials in all the prisons in India, who have been there for more than a month?

The money that can be saved thus can be so admirably utilised to completely renovate all the restrooms in all the ministries and other institutions a la the Planning Commission of India?

PS to PS.:  Sorry Viji, too much bile accumulated;  no signs of abatement.

Brave heart, Nirbhaya - (Contd)... a poem - MY MOTHER’S LAMENT

The flower has wilted and fallen
The stream has dried up – its
Purity defiled
Nirbhaya’s gone forever – but
Our fear grows only greater.

                        Where is my India?
                        Where its shame?

Our ivory towers are yellowed and cracking
Our women’s steps are ever into fear
                                                            And darkening
Our India Gate is well-protected round the clock
But not our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters.

                        Where is my India?
                        Where its shame?

The kings, queens and their ministers
Posture with their heads high - but
Their golden raiment have long vanished,
Their faces now shine with dung.

                        Where is my India?
                        Where its shame?

Unaware our royalty struts about - sure
In their power and their Z-plus.
No glances they ever had for us
No thought they ever spared for us.

                        Where is my India?
                        Where its shame?

Ministers come and go and ….. come
Setting their safety and their masters’
We the poor children of Bharat Mata
            Tremble even in our homes.

                        Where is my India?
                        Where its shame?

Our Motherland’s tears have never stopped
Long decades since the flow started
But we do not have even tears left
Who can cry every twenty minutes?

                        Where is my India?
                        Where its shame?

We are scorched by bold words and tall claims
We roast in the fires of their incredible incompetence
O Bharat Mata ki aam aurat – you can soon rest in
Rest in Peace, Rest in Peace!

The Father of the Nation’s long gone and forgotten
What’s left? Terror, fear and torment.
O my fellow mangoes, fellow mangoes
Do you hear your Mother’s lament?

                        Where is my India?
                        Where its shame?

Bharat Mata ki Jai!  Inspiring, no?
Look then at the faces of your rulers.
Sober, stoic, indifference well-masked,
They squeak ‘Jaya Hey! Jaya Hey!
                        Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey!

~David Mohan

Brave heart, Nirbhaya - collection of thoughts from friends

This girl doesn't need an introduction, she has become a family to us.  People call her Nirbhaya, Brave heart.
From the day she was thrown out of that bus, her thoughts haunted every waking moment of ours.

As always, sensational journalism and dirty politics did enter.  When you google or wiki, felt sad to find "Delhi gang rape video", "Delhi gang rape photos".  I felt anger the first day and slowly sadness crept in and as time pass by am sure, this will slowly fade as other incidents.

While at it, there are few genuine hearts young and old, started to think about how such crimes can be controlled.  Though everyday girls are getting raped, few reported, few unexposed, this girl brutally thrown out of bus battered gained public attention.

Recently, a friend pointed out that a rape victim was asked to marry the person who raped her.  Our twisted idea of giving the girl justice. All those films we watched and all those serials still being aired, has their convoluted way of  delivering justice.  I am trying to control the words, rather curses from pouring out.

While all were discussing how to punish the culprits, another friend pointed out that 25 rapes happened within this time frame.  So, how are we going to put a stop to it?  How other countries face such situations?  The answer, it happens everywhere.  Even in countries, that punishes the criminals quite severe.

We are here waiting for something to happen, a miracle.  While our government clueless, like a common man praying god and our capital city populated with Police and military.  What are we expecting?  Another gang rape?  I know that by being harsh, we only try to vent our anger.  Anger is not going to stay long and it is not going to help any of us.

I mailed, texted, FB'd few of my friends.  I added a note that said:

We talk about govt not taking action to avoid incidents like rape or other serious crimes, what do you think that we can do to bring this under control?

Probably they are clueless where to start. Feel it is our responsibility to help the government. A mail to vijanikan@gmail.com or a message is fine. Not able to rest.

Love and regards,
Viji

10 of them responded.... their responses... I had given the responses, the way it was given. Not edited it.  Not disclosing their names either.  Few wanted the conversation to be kept private.

Friend 1:

I wasn't sure how to respond... What that girl went through was a nightmare...On top of that she was caught is a sea of dirty politics after her ordeal... I really appreciate the way the public (especially the young masses) is realizing the menace and want a better future but unfortunately I also see a government that is interested in handling each day as it comes with focus only on saving itself instead of trying to plan for a better future for the people around them. When I look at them, it feels like they don't and can never understand what the public needs now..

The public has told them what the issue at hand is and have suggested a few possible ways to prevent or handle such situations in the future. If the right leader was in place, I believe he can clearly understand what the demands are and can come up with numerous solutions that can be implemented in the busiest cities to the isolated villages... This is not an evil that can vanish immediately - it may need two or three generations going in the right path to flush it out.. the minds of the people are evil and there was no one to question it until now...it is extremely deep rooted in our society (from the people in politics - the so called leaders to the people in our lives - from the rich to the poor) and there is no one to show these idiots the right path...

I believe no one solution that will solve this problem... having a strict punishment for violent crimes is a one of them but not the only solution... even the simplest crime should be understood/ acknowledged as a crime and should be handled accordingly... There should be proper education around this issue starting from within the families and to the schools and colleges...

Friend 2:

The anger as well as the helplessness in your question is understandable and at the same time, in a very realistic and cynical view, laughable. In this past one week that the entire nation has been talking about the Delhi rape incident, with all media continuously shouting out from the rooftops about the pathetic condition that the country is in, with all the candlelight vigils and marches across the city, one important statistic is being missed out. There were 25 rapes reported in this week alone. Even with all this uproar it continues undauntedly. This is why i think your mission or anybody's mission is doomed to fail if some basic steps aren't taken. I am no expert in the matter but as everybody else, i have my two cents to share. Some of these might already have been talked by the netas and the protesters.

            1) change the basic social system: As long as there are people living in this country who still think a girl child is a drain on resources and is unwanted, the dignity and respect a woman should get will never be got. And as long as she doesnt get that, she will continue to be harassed and abused.I know this has been part of our five year plan for the country for the past half a century but this is primarily required. One suggestion i have is do something like the country of australia does. They actually had a ruling that paid out money to people to procreate,  to increase population. Go google Baby bonus and see. Something like that could be worked about here. Making the girl child desirable. i am not sure if there is something like that already in existence. If there is, kindly let me know. i too have a girl child.

           2) Change the educational system: I am not going to talk about making girl education a priority. It is a priority and it is being done with through various campaigns. I am talking about changing the content of the educational system. bring in more values based education. I don't see any child today growing up with any sort of values. I remember having value education classes when i was in school. I am not sure if its still there in many schools and even if it was there, what is the impact of it. today's children learn their values from the movies they watch, the sitcoms they see, the video games that they play, the gossip magazines that they read, the anime that they download, the manga that they gawk over. Don't change the values. change the medium its being taken to

          3) Stricter policing of the police: Stricter policing is something that i keep hearing about. Ya, i accept it would be great to have more police personnel density. But as the most cynical indian i can be, all that i can think of is the increase in the bribes i need to pay, the harassment increase i would be undergoing. Along with increase of police personnel, i would need a stricter policing of the police themselves. Wasnt it jus 4 days back that we read about a woman being molested by a police inspector? Bring in a law like, suspension of the Station SI where any such incident is being found to have taken place. three strikes in an area and the entire station is fired. three stations like that and that entire area ACP is fired. three areas like that and that area DGP is fired...something along those line as i am not sure about the police hierarchy.

     4)  Faster law: Setting up of separate fast track courts is the biggest bullshit ever. So these crimes will be showcased as being processed faster? so? the common people have lost belief in the law system in the country. Their belief needs to come back. Fast track everything ( and i mean that in the actual word sense and not any other way) All citizens must feel if they take their case to court they will get justice within their lifetime and not leave the judgement of their case as a legacy for their future generations.

    5) fire the netas: this is possibly the most craziest idea i have got. If a case of rape is reported, and their is a conviction, then that area MP and MLA should be made to resign their seat. Trust me. This will make the rapes stop almost immediately. Rape, as defined by the psychologists is a crude way of the perverts taking control or power over others. And people in India are very proud of the fact that they are "connected". From there its the next "logical" step for them to show their power. Remove the power and then see.

that's it my two ...five cents. hope i haven't been too off the mark as always.

Friend 3:

Based on my exposure, I feel rape is universal and common in many countries. It doesn’t happen only in India or only in Delhi.  Raping and mugging someone in public doesn’t happen only to women. It often happens to women and children because they are more vulnerable. There are many instances
which haven’t come out to public awareness. Luckily these days, media extends its help to raise awareness to many. Rape happens in developed western countries too. In reality, If you check the real statistics, the number of rape and violence against women in India will be less compared to what happens in few other countries. But, this doesn’t mean that India is in better position.  There are many unreported incidents too in many countries.

The prevalence of rape crisis in any country are based on women’s status of living, moral and ethical standards,  the culture, legal system and  many other factors. We cannot blame the country or its government alone for this. The government can only make a system, implement rules and regulation.  People who would involve in these are not going to stop doing these just because government has implemented system against these crimes.  Government system can only play its part to deal with the situation and can provide tougher legislation.   If necessary, we need to update the law in order to take preventive measures and to provide protection of the victims or any vulnerable people from the offenders.  My personal opinion is rape crimes can be reduced and it’s not easy to eradicate completely.

India does have a legal system to deal with rape crimes and murder crimes. There are many incidents that has been dealt and penalized   India has its own statistics on rape and violence against women too.   These numbers are based on majority of reported cases that are been dealt with.

First, we need to raise awareness of sexual violence towards woman and children and work towards the change.  Women’s status and equality should improve.  We can give sexual education, moral education from school.  Moreover, women and children who are vulnerable should also take their own responsibility and try to avoid going out in unsafe area and during unsafe time.   We should not forget that there are rape victims even in most developed country, however safe the country seems to be.

If we consider certain countries where prostitution are legalized with appropriate legal system, you can see some of these crimes might have reduced to certain degree and help to improve public health too. This cannot be the only and total solution.  But, this can also be considered as part of solution to reduce rape crimes.

The society itself should work towards change, change towards inequalities of women, harassment and violence against women and children and of course men too when it comes to rape crimes.

Apart of trying towards the change, we have to consider the need of appropriate assistance, counselling, and specialized support for the victims and for anyone who are vulnerable.  There should be more support centers  agencies and organisation working towards these changes. Without these kind of support the change won’t be complete.

Keep campaigning for the change…  Silence is of no benefit.

Friend 4:

Common man is afraid of the mob.  But in fact people like them should be the ones to be afraid of the mob.

Think from the rapists point of view, though it is difficult.  It wouldn't be sexual starvation to be the reason.  Being drunk was only an enabler.  those rapists were deprived of something which they tried to satisfy. Some form of humiliation or not being respected or even as low as male ego. treat a man as an animal. he becomes the worst one u can imagine. treat a man as a gentleman, will be the perfect one.

It wont stop tomorrow or the coming year.  There is no identification process.  It's is not like a disease where you find the virus and just kill it.  I don't have a personality bio for rapists. Each one would have their own reason to do such a thing.  As far as i know, it starts at adolescence.  when a girl comes to age her mother or aunt or someone talks to her about her body and the changes.  But boys in India learn on their own.  That's OK. But, if they feel humiliated or embarrassed during this learning process it's stuck with them forever unless they can suppress the embarrassment/humiliation.  some may not even know that the guy has felt insulted.  Those are the dangerous ones.  They won't stop at one.  That's my guess so far.  I maybe wrong.

Friend 5:

A thorough education on sex and moral will help to understand women.  better forensic facility working cctv cameras will help to cuff the criminal.

The society cold/ignorant about morality.  Having sex is a game nowadays. Yes, the punishment has to be severe. But, that really doesn't curb the crime.  what may happen is the rapists will start killing their victims and cover up.  Getting bail is easy in our courts, as we have few laws with many or only loop holes.

Friend 6:

Fast track courts for speedy trial and harsh punishments and police should be taken up for lethargic probe as in most cases.  For this special law has to be enacted by
parliament. Punishments should be like 'kasai adi' as in Singapore.

Friend 7:

No easy solutions Viji......this problem has roots in Indian culture, political system and common mans ignorance. Unsure what specific step to suggest.

If any, I want a change at higher level....no laws etc.  Change has to happen with people who make impression on the mind.  People like university VC cannot ban jeans, justify it and get away.

Colleges has its system of seating boys and girls separate.  Likewise buses, walkways etc. That's actually bad  and is born out of perversion.

How will u change this? there is no quick fix I can see.

When we have sick minds at the top, sickness becomes prevalent across our system. People mentality needs to change.  In India dancing at the pubs is apparently an evil. In the film Poda Podi, the hero  is shown as being justified in thinking that salsa is a dance form not fit for his wife.

Dressing stylishly is an evil.  If at Chennai wearing lipsticks, slightly visible ones can make you a vamp, think about rural regions.

The concept of virginity until marriage is flawed.  Actress Kushboo's plight for venturing in this topic is well documented. What support did she get for speaking up...Nothing.  We left her to her plight...Politicians...people at the helm in her party, People at the courts and us.

In India there is this huge mental block in our society, calling woman 'pathini'.  This concept allows people to comment about anyone mildly different and do it with righteousness.

In one of the "Neeya Naana" show, "City girls vs Village men", the views expressed by the boys from the smaller towns just stinks of this very same perverted mindset. This isn't surprising though, What pained me was that while the girls fought back hard, they kept referring to their limits.  What limits? who set it? and who are other people to do it for you was beyond me.  The boys came in for heavy censuring. Experts came and spoke about woman needing to select the alpha male, and taking away that freedom, which instinctively she would have done, is causing the spread of betas and lesser mortals.

Bharathiyin pudhimai pen, nijamaga vendim endral
Avalukku potta vilangugalai udaikum vendumendral
Athu aval ninaithaal mattum thaan mudiyum....

Change has to happen in the streets. In day to day life. Change is never easy...it is always accompanied with resistance, mostly internal, external ones will be there but it is the internal ones that cause the most havoc.

Regarding Punishments, they are not a deterrent here. If anything, harsh laws will only become a tool for the police to terrorize us further.  System as a whole will misuse it. Just like the anti dowry laws, which are today nothing more than tools for extortion. Energy needs to be channelized in the right direction, not let it dissipate as anger. Winner finds a way to win. In the best possible route.

Friend 8:

Death sentence or shoot in public if you think it is a serious crime. Punishments needs to be tough.  It is not about democracy.  It is just that you can't forgive.  Sad part is this continues to happen all over the world and only very few gets attention  like this and people forget soon and move on. Its with government to educate such things right from school.  It is all about self discipline of an individual that gets grown.

Friend 9:

I personally believe that educating children about love and respect because what we have is a bitter past and we definitely need a better future.

Friend 10:

We should of course make better laws. Castration and life sentence seems like a fair punishment.  Even a small thing as harassment should be given bigger punishments.

Somehow I feel the attitude of people should change.

May be a hotline dedicated to such complaints should be there.

And most importantly girls need to take self defense classes though they wont do much good when there is more than one rapist.

Also, there shouldn't be restrictions on timings for girls.  Girls need to stop being afraid of the dark and start living.  For that the country needs to give them a sense of security.

If there is a way to create a better breed of men, we should let the scientists work on it.

Most important, from home front we should not encourage the thought that boys are superior to girls.  There should be equality.  The more a girl treated inferior, the more the boys get the wrong opinion.

Takeaways can be:

  • Every crime should be understood and handled.
  • Girls need to stop being afraid of the dark and start living.  For that the country needs to give them a sense of security.
  • Fire the netas; stricter policing of the police
  • Women’s status and equality should improve.  We can give sexual education, moral education from school. If we consider certain countries where prostitution are legalized with appropriate legal system, you can see some of these crimes might have reduced to certain degree and help to improve public health too.
  • Try to understand the criminals and identify the dangerous ones; educate boys the same we educate a girl at adolescence.
  • Education on sex and moral
  • Woman needing to select the alpha male, and taking away that freedom, which instinctively she would have done, is causing the spread of betas and lesser mortals.

Steve Jobs - remembering you today

There are those who love Jobs and those who hates him. He brings about extremes of emotions in people, it is either love or hate and nothing in between.

Today, I remember him as the great man behind this product called Apple.  Trying to imagine the world without those beautiful square icons adorning the phone screen.  How good it is to touch the screen and to see them spring alive. Every time I play a game or use an app in my friend's iphone, it never cease to wonder on the simplicity and user friendly UI of Apple. Pioneer of smart phones...

Every product release were carried out with style and grandeur, yet not garish but quite simple.  It piqued the interests of people all over the world and the mile long queues on the day of product launch can be called as "standing" ovations for his products.  Should we call him branding guru?

To create a product or trash it to promote another product needs guts.  Jobs had the guts to go to any extent to do anything to make his product success, including killing few of home product itself.  Should we call him God?

I salute Jobs and remember him today. Apple had seen few new product launches and few law suits, yet it still tops the list of smart phones.

Kudos Jobs!  Life is beautiful with your products.

I have one thing in common with you Jobs and that is my black turtle neck t-shirt.

Walking down the shackled bridge...

I dreamed a dream of you coming true,
my heart brimming with the tuneless tune
Walked down the shackled bridge,
Rested on a nearby ridge...

I tread with a happy smile,
Dreamt about the days bright,
Far away on a spring evening,
We walked and talked out our feelings...

Sun donning his best garb,
Shone on the stream, not too sharp...
Passing clouds stopped by,
Drizzles ripped the shy sky...

Caught a tangy whiff of you,
The whole outdoors rushed with you...
Pine, Spruce, dew and mist,
The fragrant rain all mixed...

Heady! heady indeed,
I tried to control my heart's plee..
You entered my heart with out a sign,
Dancing those steps, waltzing my spine...

Lovely to see the slanted smile,
Eyes thronged to see your sight...
Hands longed to touch your mane,
Your bewitching laugh, made me insane...

I dreamed a dream of you coming true,
My heart brimming the tuneless tune,
Sudden thunder woke me rude,
All those pleasures wiped out crude...

London Olympics 2012

London Olympics 2012 started with a bang and ended beautifully.  It entertained us, excited us and made us cheer our nations and at the same time made us watch varied beautiful sports. I realized there are games like fencing, synchronized swimming, dressage, rhythmic gymnastics besides Cricket, that were pretty captivating and full of grace, aggression, attitude and style. Felicitations while winning medals, disappointment while losing some. Though, we wanted India to win, that didn't stop us from cheering the true champions from all over the world.

Olympic delights me every season and the first thing that comes to my mind is "Asterix at the Olympics".  Ah! the sheer beauty of it.  I think people in my generation, would have grown up reading Asterix and they will feel the same. The funny story of where Astrerix wins a medal and the way he wins it somehow reminded me of Saina and her bronze ;)

This post is to share few snippets on Olympic season, on few funny quotes from winners, the hits, the misses.

Salam.! England.!

Britain known for her glorious past, a small isles which ruled many countries spread over many continents.  The pride when they say, "Rule, Britannia!rule the waves: Britons never will be slaves." There is a pride in their anthem, undoubtedly that came with power.

There were few distinct advantages due to the rule of English in our country.  Social reforms with regards to woman, railways, telegraph, post office, educational system. Not that we wouldn't have achieved them on our own, but it would have taken more time.  More than everything, all the diversified rajyas got united to fight for independence.  We got in to the "unity in diversity" mode from then on.

India's participation in Olympics:

83 athletes from India, represented to play at London Olympics 2012. They participated in 13 different sports.  We won 6 medals, a mix of silver and bronze, I am happy while the winners are lauded and rewarded handsome for their win, let us not forget those who lost it close.  Hope all the awards, money, gold doesn't make the medal winners happy and content and lose out next time.

Let us not concentrate only on the winners, there are few athletes who came close to winning the medal, who are promising.  We should train them well and gear the up to win the next Olympics. Every school if they start to train their students well in sports, then definitely there would be good number of budding athletes would turn out every year.  Unfortunately, we are in a country were most of the Schools does not have a play ground for kids.

Funny happenings around Olympics:

India honored the athletes on a dais, and the anchor due to excitement or lack of preparation made one blunder after another.  It was quite funny to watch, how someone can be that clumsy. Narang and Saina were announced as silver medalists. Shooter Joydeep was taken by surprise when he was called an archer. Saina was called Sania Nehwal and Yogeshwar dutt was referred to as Yogender Dutta...

Few quotes: Courtesy: The Montreal Gazette

Russian women’s handball coach Evgeny Trefilov: “Some of [the team] simply live in a fantasy world. I don’t. I could imagine I look like [French actor] Alain Delon or James Bond but I don’t — I look more like a monkey.”

Hungarian water-polo player Zoltan Szecsi(who had to go for dope testing): “They simply cannot believe that such a great body can be built without any banned stuff.”

39-year-old Bulgarian gymnast Iordan Iovtchev: “I’m just trying to survive. My body’s falling apart. My back’s hurting, my ankles are hurting.”

Blogger's note:

Maybe we should conduct Olympics in India.  Myth: If players play in their home ground, chances of winning is high.  Who knows, we can win a gold in gymnastics too.

The new dress code for women in India

The last decade or so, we see a new dress code evolving. The dress which dominates over other dresses.  Easy to wash, hassle free and quite roomy is the fact why women love to wear them when they are at home, be it night or day or when they go out for local shops or while dropping their kids at school. Night dress a.k.a Nightie is not a sleep wear anymore.

Recently few schools in Bangalore have banned parents from dropping their kids at School wearing nightwear.  After reading this news, I watched a commercial which came with a tagline, "oru kudumba thalaiviya enna unara vaipadhu bla bla bla"... It's weird and quite funny to watch this ad.  Don't miss it!

These commercials highlight that this dress covers women from head to toe. Probably we are missing something here aren't we? nightwear is not supposed to cover from head to toe, it is supposed to be brief, hassle free, less cumbersome... ahem! to sleep with :p

Anna Hazare; a refreshing change to Indian politics?

People were very supportive to Anna Hazare, when he started his first hunger strike in 2011.  The majority of the nation was behind him supporting the cause, while few called him bakwas. Numerous such hunger strikes happened and when people realised that Lokpal is still a distant dream, the pulic support started slowly to wean off.

But, nothing prepared us for the shock, when Anna announced about his "decision to consider entering electoral politics", carefully worded at that.  Now, we are all ears and quite eager.  As the saying goes, without putting our feet down in gutters, we can't clean it.  There is this glimpse of hope that Team Anna will definitely become an honest alternate to other existing parties, is what making us eagerly waiting for more news on this.

It is quite refreshing to think there is a potential team, who can make a difference for a decade at least if they come to power.  Sorry for that pessimistic note but we know now after all these years that corruption is ground reality in politics.  But, a decade of honesty, a decade of a clean hands, a decade of bringing out new reforms is what India needs now and am sure, one change will bring about more changes.  We need fresh young blood, who are little selfless and who put our nation before their needs.

The only thing that worries me is Anna's invitation to Congress and BJP followers to join their movement if they are not happy with their respective parties.  Looks like an open invitation that can dilute, corrupt, the present determined team.

Dig Vijay Singh (Congress party) welcoming Team Anna's decision to enter politics had said, "I am very happy at their decision, I welcome them. Till now they have been only accusing us, now they must get ready to be at the receiving end." He further said, "You have to be in the system to understand how difficult it is."  Phew! he said it, difficult indeed... but who made the system difficult in the first place. Post independence, Congress was the party who ruled India for 48 years and still counting.

"Ours will not be a party, but a movement", says Kejriwal while addressing the gathering at Jantar-mantar. Let us hope for the best.

Former army chief general V.K. Singh (who had a confrontation with the present government on regarding his age issue), lending his support to Anna Hazare's movement against corruption, said, "It is in your hands.  The right to vote is with you.  You can throw the corrupt people out. Annaji is providing an alternative political force.  Go to every village and spread awareness among people."  It gave me goosebumps when I heard the speech, but hope it doesn't turn out like election campaign during election time.  Something productive should come out of such campaigns, else it will fade off easily.  Let us hope for volunteers from villages to take these messages to common people.

A new political party, with clean hands providing the voters a good corruption free alternative is what we need at this hour.  Whether Team Anna is that alternative remains to be seen.

Anna Hazare is like Anniyan Remo or Indian Kamal, only that instead of weapons or violence, he had chosen "hunger strike" as his weapon.

Jai Hind!

I believe I can touch the sky

Google doodles Amelia Earhart on her 115th Birthday, that's today.  Now did I hear this name quite recently somewhere?  I tried to recollect and Oh! Yeah! the Maruti Suzuki sequel "kitna deti hai".  Quickly checked wiki and realised that it was Amelia Johnson, yet another aviatrix.

Leaned back on my chair,  with my morning cup of coffee slowly thoughts drifted to the day when I flew for the first time.  It was from Mumbai to Chennai and I was 38 years old then.  My brother booked the flight tickets and I was thrilled as well as slightly afraid.  Along with my mom, husband, and son entered the airport.  It was flying for first time for all of us except for my husband.

I checked in at the airport and waited for the security check. My wish to fly was so intense, I would have dreamt about flying at least 10 or 15 times.  For a person who had never seen the insides of an airplane, in my dreams I saw it as a bus.  There were times when I stood, holding the iron rails on the roof of the plane, probably to balance when the flight turned right or left.  There were times when, I stood on a long queue to buy tickets for my flight to the US, and my mom would precisely aim that moment to wake from me my dreams.  And once in my dream, when I was about to enter the airplane, I heard two men talking in whispers about their plans to hijack the plane and I call the watchman/police aside and tell them what I overheard and they stop the flight.  But, never once the flight took off and I travelled on air.

It was a low fare flight and with so many what-ifs running in mind, climbed the air plane, to be greeted by the air hostess and a dashing steward.  I gave my usual broad smile, wondering why others just nodded off those greetings.  I got into the flight but forgot to bring the cotton to plug in to my ears.  Anyways, I remembered my brother showing me a pouch with earphones, toffees etc and was waiting for them to deliver my kit.  After a while, I realized they don't provide such kits in low fare flights.  Those flights were meant for everyone to fly and the flight charges affordable to everyone.  I saw an old man carrying an old polythene bag and thrust the bag inside the cupboard on top of his seat.  He carried on with the flight rituals as if he travelled everyday from Mumbai to Chennai. I kicked myself for visiting the prominent shop which sells high class leather bags and paid a fortune to buy one, just because I was flying the next week.

A pretty girl who sat on the row before me, pressed the switch and called for the flight attendant.  The handsome guy who greeted me walked through the aisle and asked her how he could help her.  She asked for some cotton and he provided her some.

I coughed and asked him little hesitant if he can provide me some cotton too.  He apologized and told me that they don't have the cotton and if he could help with anything else.  Felt embarassed and decided not to ask him anything until of course he comes back to me with an apology.

I was thrilled when the plane slowly crept to the run way and like a thunder zoomed past the runway and lifted its wing.  Finally my dream came true and I started to hum, "I believe I can fly; I believe I can touch the sky", though on a different context, I did fly and tried touching the sky and with due thanks to my brother.

All the jubilation, remained only for 3 or 4 minutes, all of a sudden the air plane slowly tilted to its left and then to right and went down few feet low, my stomach lurched and I knew for sure something was wrong and waited for the crew to announce we are living the final few minutes of our life. No announcement came and after few minutes the airplane righted itself. I was aware of every move of the plane.  Most of the time the plane was tilted and I decided to reduce some weight before I flew the next time.

There was a small commotion, when the air-hostesses dragged a small pantry on wheels and took the orders, collected the money and delivered the goodies .  I didn’t bat an eyelid when my son wanted a cold drink and heard the price was thrice the original cost, but bought it with a flourish.

My hands held tight and lips chanting "Ram", the 1 hour and 45 minutes stretched like one day for me and held my breath tight till the final announcement came that we are landing the Meenambakkam airport, Chennai.  I was still holding my breath, till the third wheel was lowered with a thud on the ground.  I had heard that accidents happen, when the third small wheel attached to the nozzle of the flight refuse to lower. It was only when the air plane stopped at the runway and I stood to get down, I realized that I had been a fool not to enjoy the trip but spent it worrying hard.  Not that I wanted to smile, but wouldn’t it be considered rude if I didn’t return the smile of the handsome steward as I was leaving.

Did I tell you that I am now 41 and travelled 7 times after my first experience and still get little queasy when the wings slightly lower and balances after the take off and I had gained 8 kgs since then. And, did I tell you that I am scared of heights?

A plea - A cry to PETA or Blue cross or any one who have a heart...

Taking a quick break from the play I am writing, as there is another pressing need to attend to. Read the post and spread the words...

Does killing animal for meat or for skin or for fur alone is cruelty towards animals?

A trip to Guindy National Park, will change your mind.... Cruelty can be extended in many ways and this could be done, by poor unclean, not eco friendly surroundings.  Please visit the place once to witness the pathetic condition in which the birds, animals live out there.

Litters, dirty ponds (if you can call them ponds)...the pond am sure is stagnant water and which is not being cleaned or refilled even once in a year. Meager food, no proper sheds or open area for the animals to rest or walk.

Adding few pictures, I took... "A picture is worth a thousand words" they say.

A pool full of debris

No proper security check: Is deer an omnivore? Plastic covers not allowed inside... but people hijack it in and the deer grabbed the food and ate egg and chicken biriyani.... and it almost had the food with the polythene cover, fortunately the food dropped in the ground... We all watched, none of us dared to go near the deer to take away the plastic sheet... it's horn was very sharp and we didn't want to risk our lives...What if the deer swallowed the cover, it might choke to death...

Deer eating an egg...

A herd of deer in a tiny shelter and the Sun was blazing... I didn't see any water tank near this place...

Yes! that's food tray, with almost empty tray and hords of hungry deers... is the food edible? it looks like droppings....

thin babies

Hungry deer

crocodile... and the depth of water is barely 10 inches - no I didn't dare to measure, an approximate measure...The crocodile looked like a sketch, 2 dimensional, is it dead or alive?

minutest pond I've ever seen

Food or drinking water... look at the colour of that liquid... it smelled bad too

The whole place stinks and except for some birds and deer and 20 to 25 Monkeys, I didn't find many animals here.

Guindy park then:
When I went to this park 7 or 8 years back, It wasn't this bad and there were Bears, Hyenas, a Lion and lots of elephants and monkeys and hundreds of birds.... Nothing! absolutely nothing now.  Hope those animals were transferred to Vandalur zoo.

(May be if they can't do much about the facility, then the animals and birds should be transferred to a proper place, where they can have decent food and clean water and some space to walk or fly. For the birds the nets are placed too low, three or four feet from ground, they will forget to fly, am sure about it.)

Guindy park now:

Lovers park... You just have to take a 10 rupees ticket per head and go in and spend the whole day, talking and have fun.  The couples cuddled and doing everything except making love... (Not my business) Guards gazing at the couples and enjoying what they were seeing, instead of stopping kids playing pranks with animals, throwing stones at them.  There were kids who fed the animals with kurkure, lays chips and their snacks, while I appreciate the love of kids, I was scared that the snack can be hazardous as the kids can't differentiate between adults and baby animals... the kurkure or chips can choke the baby animals.

PETA or Blue Cross or any one who have a heart... Save the animals and birds before they die...

"Animals - its their world too... Help us to help them"
- Blue Cross of India

PS: Please don't ask me what I did to better the animals/birds life there... I didn't, I was busy taking photos of them.

wisdom comes with experience

At one, I learnt crawling was fun. At forty one, I still feel crawling is fun #blamemykneesnotme
