Habit of falling for addictive words! deadly than swine flu... gag and save yourself!

I was talking to a friend yesterday over phone and suddenly "two things" dawned on me.  It was on how frequently, I used the word "I mean" and "two things". After 30 mts, I heard him using "I mean" too. Did I pass on the trait to him, unknowingly?

I became conscious of the usage and started to mumble and eat at words and found to my horror, I used the word "actually" at places, were it was "actually" not required.

Another friend of mine, used to grit and close her ears, whenever I used the word, no issues. "Viji, stop it will you? I hate it, whenever you say, 'no issues'." From then on, every time I used it, I made a conscious effort not to use it and I should say that I succeeded, only to get in to a new habit and royally bask in it, until I realised the fact or rudely pointed out about it.

I started to observe people, when they speak and found that few words, are often used than needed and becomes an addictive habit and hard to shed.

"Yeah", "OK", "fine", "I understand", "got it?", "literally", "funny", "the thing is", are just to name a few and not to mention few four letter words, which are being used lavishly by our younger generation. What more?!? they are often misused than properly used.

It's even strange, when a person starts a dialogue, "I don't really know, what to say" and this opens up ONE new flood of speech, often leave us wondering, 'Thank God' for small mercies! What if he "really knows" the thing?

The terms now in rage is, "at the end of the day".  I feel, its being used as frequently as a 'period' (as in punctuation).

Is it a crime? It's just not a crime, its worse than Swine Flu. Save yourself and save the Society!

I have always disliked malapropism. I hate unnecessary fillers used whilst speaking/writing. And, this post is just about them. Gladly, I am not a victim of this one. Whenever I recognize the symptoms for the same, I treat myself.

Ajey, glad to hear that. But, I do use them and when I realise that I had been using it, try to put a stop to that. It's like common cold, easily spread from one person to another.

Viji, you are right. You surely get caught with such usages of people close to you. Sometimes even other mannerisms. There is one friend of mine who uses this word - 'saniyane' (Tamil: Refers to God Shani, but used for rebuking) - so casually. You will agree with me what a tabooed word it is in our households. My grand mom and mom wouldn't mind even hitting me if I use it. But nowadays, the word has almost become a way of addressing in close circles.

Like what Mr.Ajey said I try hard to clip such words at least in formal communication - written or oral - like say 'literally'. Of all the words, what irritates me the MOST is the word 'basically'. It is used by almost any person who wants to communicate in English, and mainly by people who want to flaunt around in English.
