Far behind - Act - 1, Scene - 6

Curtain rises

Mallory seen strumming his guitar and humming...

The street light bit unkind,
Roads stripped merciless; frail
Yonder a desolate man barring his soul,
The song unattended, came blaring loud...

Echoes from my heart, I try to hide,
The attic where the little boy hide,
The ruckus heard from below,
Wishing for quiet, but more shouts follow...

When I felt her hands on me, I pretended to sleep,
Callous, her hands shook me awake,
I opened my eyes to see her beedy eyes,
She lay down next to me and ordered, "Touch!"

Stephen Mallory, enters to see his father in tears.  He lowered himself next to his Dad and held his hands.

Stephen: Dad! How are you?
Mallory: (exclaiming) Steve? What brings you here? When we spoke last week, you never told me about your visit.
Stephen: I came on a business visit Dad.  Will be here for couple of weeks.
Mallory: How is Ed? You could have brought him. It has been almost six years since I saw my grandson. How is Linda?
Stephen: Ed has to attend school and Linda should be there to take care of him. Dad, I still don't understand what is stopping you from visiting us.
Mallory: I will soon. Now, you go freshen yourself. Say Hello to Bertha and tell her breakfast for two.
Stephen: Sure Dad. Can we have breakfast served at Lawn?
Mallory: (Grinning) Why not? The English air will do you good.
Stephen: (Laughing) Missed you Daddy..
Mallory: I missed you too, Son. Now, come soon. We have a lot to chat.

Bertha serves breakfast and lays the tea tray on the table and leaves.  Mallory prefer not to talk while eating and except for chirping of birds and clatter of the cutlery, there wasn't much sound. Bertha came to clear the table and both Mallory and Steve thanked Bertha for the delicious breakfast and raised their steaming cup of tea to their lips and started to drink.

Stephen: Can I ask you something Dad?
Mallory: Yes, son provided if you leave me to my choice to answer or not.
Stephen: Of course, Dad. Won't force you for a reply. Why were you crying, when I came in to see you?
Mallory: I was thinking of my childhood and few bad memories.
Stephen: Dad, you never told me much about Grand Dad and grand ma before.
Mallory: There's nothing much to say.  Your Grand Dad loved his wife, my Mom and when she died, while giving birth to me, his heart broke and transferred his love to me.  After 4 years, he married another woman and neglected her, except to bring me up.
Stephen: Grand mom? Was she kind to you?
Mallory: You said you came for an official visit, what time should you be at office?

Mallory understands that his Dad is trying to evade the topic and let the conversation drop.

Stephen: Will be home by evening dad and we will continue the conversation.

Saying that, he leaves. Bertha was standing near the stairs and when she saw Stephen, she asks if he plans to meet the doctor. He nodded and headed to his room.

Curtain lowered...

Far behind - Act - 1, Scene - 5

Piano plays at the background..

Mallory: (to his pet dog, Max ) Wherever I go, whatever I do, death follows. You have any idea how much it pains to see some one vibrant and alive one moment and dies the next, soon after they tread my path? Trust me, Max! I don't mean any harm to them but I am cursed. Evil always follows on my wake.

Max growled playfully...

Hearing Mallory talking to someone, Bertha came out of Kitchen and found Mallory talking to himself. Worried expression crossed on her face and she decided to talk to Stephen. She felt Mallory was disturbed about something and muttered to himself on more than one occasion.

The longcase clock struck 2 and Mallory got up and rang the bell for his Tea.

Mallory stared at the clock and remembered his fascination towards it when he was young. His dad taught him how to key the clock and he had to climb on a chair and tip toe to accomplish that. He wished to become as tall as his dad and powerful too. He had seen people wait for his dad to take his advice on any legal issues. His dad a retired Judge, always tried to help people who were distressed.

Bertha entered the drawing room and saw Mallory talking to the clock. She decided to call Stephen Mallory that night. She was sure that Mallory needed immediate care and treatment for his mental stability. She almost spilled the tea, when Mallory in a booming voice started to sing...

Mallory:

Awww merry merry clock,

You wait for an hour to sound your gong...
When you sound one, it equals none..
Two, you almost make it through,
Three sounded benign,
And Four not so kind,
At Five you start the fight,
At Six you made up with a tryst...
At Seven, you went agog..
And Eight completely lost..
It was Nine, time for a wind.
Ten, the echoes not kind,
It was eleven and I settled to snore,
Am sure you will continue to explore...
Awww merry merry clock...
Oh! no no... you can't run this fast...
My merry merry little clock...

The curtain comes down and Mallory's voice continued to sing but from a distance...

Far behind - Act - 1, Scene - 4

Sound of Birds chirping and fluttering of wings.

Curtain raises

The clock strikes 6 times

Mallory rubbing his eyes woke up and sat on his bed. Its new year but was like any other day to Mallory. He got up from the bed and found that he was wearing the suit he wore the previous night and hisshoes.

He remembered standing at the bank of Thames, taking turns watching the fireworks and the tall handsome girl who looked foreign and he wished she was with him.

Just then she turned and looked straight at Mallory.  Mallory's eyes not flinching looked at her.

Abe turned hastily towards Carlos, her hand on her forehead.

Carlos: Headache?

Arabella: Strange, it's as if someone chose the corridors of my mind to take a stroll. The drinks, fireworks and the band is taking its toll I guess.

Arabella wanted to stretch her stiff back. She tried to lean on the rails of the bridge and she saw the rails of the bridge open and the last waking thought was that man's face starring hard.

Far behind - Act - 1, Scene - 3

Violins in perfect sync and the voice sings...

I see the door to your mind,
The keys lay in my brain.
I try hard to keep your door locked..
Alas! I just can't stop.

One door leads to another,
I leave them open, fearing another,
I can trigger a thought in you,
And follows up till it turns true.

When I slowly close the doors,
It doesn't matter any more...
You are not yours ever,
The key is with me for good and forever...

Curtain raises:

11.50 PM 31st December, 1968

Couples lined up at the bank of Thames to welcome the New Year with firework display.

Arabella: Carlos, it's magical. The fireworks, Thames, you by my side. I am excited. London is special for me.

Carlos (smiling): Yes Abe, it gave you to me.

Arabella: And, you to me.

Abe stretches her hand to Carlos and turned to look at people around and she saw the middle aged man looking at her. She turned hastily and felt her hand touching her forehead.

Carlos: Headache?

Abe: Strange, it's as if someone chose the corridors of my mind to take a stroll. The drinks, fireworks and the band is taking its toll I guess.

Carlos: We can go home if you are unwell.

Abe slowly stretched her back and in a fraction of second things happened.

Abe felt herself getting sucked into the whirlpool of dark chocolate. Round, round and round...she went in.

Carlos: (Shouts) Someone help, my girl fell in Thames.

Carlos removed his jacket to jump in the river, people pulled him and told him it's the most dangerous spot to jump. There was a rumour about a Crocodile been spotted there.

Carlos shocked, sobbed.

Curtain rises

Mallory reading newspaper...

Page 3: Justin 6 years, died at the local hospital with severe concussion on his head after he fell down from a swing. Locals are angry at Government for not maintaining children play area well.

A witness said the boy was requesting passers by to push the swing high. He was singing,

"When I go up the sky,
I see the angel with her wand held high...
Mountains of chocolates,
With ice cream waterfalls,
A toffee train house
Taking me for a ride,
I went one round
I went two round
I went the third round
On a happy ride"

Mallory closed the newspaper with a deep frown on his face.

Mallory:  Bertha can you get me some Tea?

He heard Bertha's mumble and settled to wait patiently for his Tea.

Mallory: Bertha, be careful with the kettle, don't let the hot water spill on your hand.

After 5 minutes, Mallory hearing Bertha's curse enters the kitchen to find Bertha holding her hand under the tap.

Act - 1, Scene - 1

Background sound before curtain raises: a street quarrel and a gun shot...

Cymbal crashes...

Curtain raises...

It's our Mallory his silent self, taking a walk in the park.  He nodded to himself, having a conversation with himself.

He stopped near a swing and saw the little boy swing up down, up down...

Mallory started to sing in his mind...

"When I go up the sky,
I see the angel with her wand held high...
Mountains of chocolates,
With ice cream waterfalls,
A toffee train house
Taking me for a ride,
I went one round
I went two round
I went the third round
On a happy ride"

Mallory looked at the boy, smiled and continued to walk and the boy started to sing.

"When I go up the sky,
I see the angel her wand high..."

Mallory's soliloquy

Searching every corner of this deserted room,
I found many, I found none,
Within the restricted mind and far behind,
I found many, I found none...

Raced to my mother's womb,
To seek the warmth inside,
I woke up to find,
Visions unkind...

There I see myself hidden,
On the loft forgotten and spent...
No light, can enter my room without being seen,
No air to pollute the thickest dungeon...

I live to survive, every day of my life,
I fight every forbidden step,
I battle till my knuckles sore,
I refuse to rest, it is for lesser souls..

Every day, one new oath,
Every day, a new fight,
Wish I could live hassle free,
One day of my life trouble free...

There is this foe in every friend,
A moment convoluted, a moment kind,
I am God, I am Fiend,
I know the truth; I comprehend...

I don't care if you leave,
This is what I am, for the whole world to see,
Quit and go, if you dare to deny,
Stay and fight, if you like.

Searching every corner of this deserted room,
I found many, I found none,
Within the restricted mind and far behind,
I found many, I found none...
