Emotional vampires

We meet thousands of people, during our personal lives, school, college and work but only handful of people stay in our mind. Such people might be good conversationalists, very bad conversationalists, innocent ones who blurts out before they think and brings fun to the table, and the "emotional vampires".

The first three types of people are those who allows the whole group to talk and conversation happens..but the emotional vampires, are those who talk non stop. Wherever there are little pauses, they fill it with their observations followed by a pat and guffaw.. After 15 minutes of your time with them, you feel emotionally drained.  Every turn a conversation takes, they try to bend it towards them and start, 'You know, I... blah blah blah....", as you try to turn a deaf ear and pretend interest on people around you, there they go again, " look at that girl's dress, it's yuck... You know my sister got me a dress from Paris by this leading (some name) couturier who had designed for Paris Hilton." Whether you are interested or not, the conversation continues.

You try to change the topic, try to stick to a safe topic.. "Movies".. there they go, "I had to tell you this, when my husband and me were dating, there was this top theatre and he booked the last three rows and try to imagine this... it was just me and him"... If Men talk about beers or a drink, it would be the most wonderful drink which was offered to her, while flying first class...

Again change of topic, "climate"... "when we went to Switzerland for honeymoon", change of topic, "tummy ache"... "hey be careful, last week I was down with a tummy virus, I had to take a scan and can you guess how much it cost me?" change of topic, "a cousin who passed away last week", "Same happened to me too a year back, you know my cousin who was heading entire US sales of -----company, died last year and his wife, the moment she saw me, she hugged me and broke down. People told me that she was trying to control herself very hard and just 'one word from you, she cried'." I had to control my tongue, while it wanted to ask, what was that one word that made her cry? May be I am bitching about Emotional Vampires, but believe me its tiring to have someone talk this way day in, day out and they drain the hell out of you.  One can't avoid such people, they stick to you as leech, the more you try to shed, the more they would stick...

Every conversation had to center around them... Its pathetic at the way they crave for attention, I can only say that, I really feel sorry for them.  There is a saying in Tamil about such people... "Attention cravers would want to be a bride or bridegroom in a wedding while a corpse in a mourning house.."

This post might sound rude to you and but you have only enough patience and when it runs out feel like screaming at the top pitch, "Will you stop it?"

Please don't ask me, why I am telling all this? I know every individual differs and it's wrong to talk about people behind their back.. Not that I didn't address this directly, but it fell on deaf years.. so, the next obvious question, "Why are you cribbing then?" Common! even I can take only this much!!

Hi Viji,

Avanga ellam romba pavaam. Mostly this kind of people's childhood might have been bad or worse. At some cases, the emotional vampires parents would have inherited these traits from their father or mother or some times both.

These people just wanted to express themselves completely to the victim and take the victim for granted and never bother about them and their feelings. And some times, if you observe, they would not be able to mingle with other people very easily.

Good Post.
